Weather this week

Guess you are all aware but winter is returning with vengeance this week so be sure to cover up your tender bits of veg and seedlings - i am using an old window that i saved - looks absolutely awful but works - i think I am turning into my Dad. Onions have finally decided to make an entrance better late than never.

  1. Doesnt whinge have an 'h'?

Following the much celebrated arrival of Poundland in Elgin High Street, my artichokes are snug under a comfy £1 fleece blanket.

I see theyre predicting snow here tomorrow night and Wednesday but when one cultivates nature's bounty then one must also accept her moods.

  2. Not down here in the souf we spell things differently and mostly incorrectly.

When you say artichokes is that something to grow from seed or do you buy the plants in? Mrs Lotment is keen we put some in.

  4. You can't blame Mrs L for that. If there's one vegetable to represent Italy on the world stage it is carciofi. It must remind you of Turin. I grew from seed last year because I had nothing better to do. Will plant them out this year. They are very easy but it's along process. Best way to grow them is find somebody already growing mature plants and get them to divide the root or take a root/sucker cutting. You will probably be able to find some specialist nursery/online selling roots. They wont flower too well in the first year but you might get a couple. However, they can be an attractive ornamental border plant in their own right. Find a sunny spot with a fair amount of room.
