Choke's on me

With the help of sandy soil and plenty of mulch, I successfully nursed 15 of my 16 artichoke plants through their first winter outdoors. I have four different varieties and am well on my way to cornering the local market with jars of carciofi grigliati - which won't be difficult as no-one else grows them and Valerie and I probably constitute the whole market. The arrival of the first bud, along with the first nose of asparagus, has to be one of the highlights of the year, which I guess sums up my lifestyle these days?

The highlight of your life surely has to be blogging on shallow onions at 6.40am on a friday morning? Anyway good news with your carciofi one to have in stock in the farm shop when the coach trips arrives. Life here in the Vale is idyllic as always and surprise surprise my veg is actually doing brilliantly this year must be the weather or the slightly longer time i have devoted to the garden - it actually looks really professional as i have done some weeding etc and i am watering regulary as well. I knew i was going wrong somewhere. Still its not over till the harvest is in so fingers crossed for the next couple of months. I am in the ERM manchester sunflower competition and am going well - but just noticed tonight some holes in some of the leaves - any thoughts as to what this might be appreciated - take care and hope the house is rising from the foundations ! cheers

  2. A sunflower competition! - it's a hedonistic place these days, ERM. I can imagine how that would have gone down late on a Thursday night in the Dolly circa 1996. Holes? Something's eating them, Al. Could be nothing to worry about, could be serious. Start panicking when the hole becomes bigger than the leaf. Glad to be of assistance.
